Srinagar, Feb 15: 66 government schools in Basohli constituency of Kathua district are functioning with only a single teacher.
MLA Darshan Kumar have previously raised this question into the Assembly. While providing the reply the Minister in charge of the School Education Department said that Basohli constituency has a total of 240 government schools. These include 156 primary schools, 58 middle schools, 17 high schools and nine higher secondary schools.
Out of these, 66 schools have been identified as single-teacher institutions, with an overall average pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) of 16. “Additional teachers shall be deployed to the identified needy schools through rationalisation after a review in the new academic session,” the Minister said.
The Minister further said that against a sanctioned strength of 909 teacher posts in the constituency, only 554 are currently in position, leaving 355 posts vacant.
The Minister said that 547 posts of general line teachers were frozen for transition of Rehbar-e-Taleem (RReT)/Teacher Grade-II and III posts vide corrigendum to Government Order No. 144-Edu of 2020 dated June 19, 2020. The Minister also informed that no fresh recruitment of teachers has been made since 2016.
“Teaching staff is being provided under rationalisation to schools where inadequate staff is available. In addition, subject-specific teachers and Cluster Resource Coordinators (CRCs) are being provided under the Samagra Shiksha scheme,” the Minister added.
