Guwahati: A massive fire broke out late Monday night in Bamunimaidam, near railway gate no.-6, engulfing a densely populated residential area and causing extensive property damage.Moononjan Ramchiary, response team commander of the fire and emergency services, said the emergency call was received at around 10pm, prompting an immediate dispatch from the Chandmari station.“Within minutes, flames spread through a cluster of houses built with tin sheets, bamboo, and partial concrete — materials highly vulnerable to fire. Though the exact cause remains unknown, we suspect a gas leak or faulty wiring,” he said.Stored LPG cylinders intensified the blaze, with six cylinders — four of 19kg and two of 5kg capacity — exploding during the incident. Fortunately, no casualty was reported as residents managed to escape in time.According to the disaster report, houses belonging to Birender Roy, Joyram Hazarika, Ram Babu Ray, Kusheshwar Ray, and Ranjit Ray were severely affected. Of the Rs 15 lakh worth of assets involved, Rs 13 lakh were destroyed and only Rs 2 lakh salvaged.Firefighting efforts were hindered by a narrow approach road, delaying access to the site. The first fire tender reached the spot at 10:06pm, followed by eight additional tenders from multiple stations to contain the blaze.
