Kolkata: Following trial runs, the newly set up Bailey bridge connecting Salt Lake AA Block and VIP Road at Dakshindari is open for both-way vehicular movement from 7 am till 10 pm. Further steps, such as installing height bars, CCTV and a traffic signal system on the VIP Road approach end, will be taken, after which the bridge may be thrown open to traffic for 24 hours.Earlier, Bidhannagar traffic police had initiated a trial run of the bridge from Feb 11 evening to assess the traffic flow patterns and to check traffic management hindrances. During the trial run, officers said height bars need to be installed to prevent the entry of very heavy vehicles weighing over 100 metric tonne. To ensure public safety, CCTV cameras and a traffic signalling system need to be installed on the VIP Road approach bridge. “Entering the airport-bound VIP Road flank from Salt Lake is now easier and less time-consuming. However, sometimes there’s congestion on the Salt Lake end of the bridge,” said a motorist.
