Guwahati: Justice Ashutosh Kumar was sworn in as chief justice of Gauhati high court on Monday. The oath was administered by governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.Justice Kumar was born on Oct 1, 1966. He succeeded Justice Vijay Bishnoi, who was elevated as a judge in the Supreme Court. Justice Kumar completed his schooling at St Michael’s High School, Patna, and graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He obtained his LLB from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.He enrolled as an advocate on July 9, 1991, at the Patna high court. During his practice, Justice Kumar appeared in several significant criminal matters, including cases involving convicts on death row. He also briefly served as a govt pleader for the state of Bihar.Justice Kumar was elevated as a Judge of the Patna high court on May 15, 2014. He was subsequently transferred to the Delhi high court on Jan 7, 2015, and later repatriated to the Patna high court on Nov 24, 2017.
