Bokaro: Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday re-launched the Asansol–Bokaro Steel City Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) rail service via video conferencing, bringing renewed rail connectivity between two key steel hubs. For Bokaro, the restart of this MEMU service is seen as a lifeline for daily commuters. Thousands of workers employed in SAIL units, students, small traders and daily wage earners who were earlier dependent on costly road transport and irregular express trains now have access to a reliable and affordable travel option. The service, which remained suspended since the Covid-19 period, resumed under the Adra Division of South Eastern Railway as train number 63592.The MEMU connects Bokaro Steel City with Asansol via Purulia and West Bardhaman, creating a fast and economical “steel corridor”. Regular stoppages at smaller stations are expected to benefit rural pockets, enabling easier access to Bokaro’s markets, educational institutions and industrial zones. Bokaro railway officials said the electric MEMU will significantly reduce travel time and costs, especially through subsidised monthly season tickets.
