Ongole: The long-pending dream of Andhra Kesari Prakasam University moving into its own campus with a permanent building complex is set to become a reality after the state government cleared the proposal. The university authorities have identified suitable land on the outskirts of Ongole and initiated steps to formally kick-start the project.
The proposed building complexes are expected to significantly improve access to higher education for students in Prakasam district, who currently depend largely on private institutions as the university functions from rented premises. Authorities plan to offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses along with research facilities.
The government’s clearance marks a major milestone for the district, where demands for a full-fledged university campus have persisted for several years. The university was established in 2022 after being carved out of Acharya Nagarjuna University. Despite its formation, funds for a permanent campus had not been sanctioned until now. As a result, many students were forced to migrate to neighbouring districts for higher education due to the lack of adequate infrastructure locally.
Officials said the land allocation process, which had been delayed due to administrative and technical issues, has now been resolved. With the government’s nod, groundwork for the project is expected to begin shortly. In addition to the main campus, land has also been earmarked for academic and administrative buildings. Detailed plans are being drawn up to ensure the infrastructure meets future academic and research requirements.
University vice-chancellor Dr DVR Murthy said works on the administrative and hostel complexes would be launched soon. While the administrative block will be spread over 30,000 sq ft, the hostel complex will cover 10,000 sq ft. The university has also received approval to set up dedicated pharmacy and engineering colleges as constituent colleges. Separate building complexes for both colleges are planned. “The construction will be taken up in a phased manner,” the vice-chancellor said.
