Amritsar: Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney has urged the Union govt to immediately announce a special compensation package for Punjab farmers facing severe losses due to recent unseasonal rains, hailstorms and strong winds. In a statement issued on Monday, Sahney said he had written to Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, noting that preliminary assessments indicate crop damage ranging from 30% to 70% across the state. With over 34 lakh hectares under wheat cultivation, he said, the scale of devastation is immense and deeply concerning for the agrarian economy. He stressed that the magnitude of the crisis is beyond the state’s capacity to handle alone, adding that farmers are still reeling from the devastating kharif floods of 2025 and many have yet to receive adequate compensation.MSID:: 130061562 413 |
