A24 has officially announced that Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring, the award-winning fantasy video game developed by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco. The film will mark the first major collaboration between the indie powerhouse studio and the game’s original creators, with Bandai Namco co-producing.

Garland, known for Ex Machina, Annihilation, and this year’s Warfare, continues his deep creative partnership with A24. Co-directed with Ray Mendoza, Warfare has already grossed over $32 million since its April release. Garland is also attached to Sony’s upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy.
Production on Elden Ring will be led by Peter Rice, alongside DNA’s Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, with George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis also on board, who helped craft the game’s lore.
Released in February 2022, Elden Ring became a global phenomenon, shipping over 30 million units and collecting multiple Game of the Year awards. Set in the mythic Lands Between, the action RPG invites players to piece together the shattered Elden Ring and restore balance to a realm undone by chaos, beasts, and ancient magic. A spin-off title, Elden Ring Nightreign, hits consoles May 30.
The upcoming movie arrives amid a growing wave of prestige game-to-film projects. Just last month, A24 confirmed it’s developing a live-action Death Stranding movie with A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski.
With Garland at the helm, Elden Ring has the potential to become a landmark fantasy epic for the screen.
