New Delhi: Delhi Police’s crime branch has arrested Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, chairman of the Al Falah group, in a case of cheating and forgery registered on a complaint filed by the University Grants Commission. Jawad was earlier arrested by the enforcement directorate.“He was arrested on Jan 27 and taken on remand of four days for interrogation,” said a senior cop.The university had come under the scanner after it emerged that the Delhi bomber, Umar Un Nabi, was working as a professor there. Other doctors from the university were also arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Red Fort blast case investigation and the case of seizure of explosives from Faridabad by J&K Police. The university is located at Dhauj in Haryana’s Faridabad district and also has a hospital on its premises.The crime branch had filed two FIRs against the university in Nov and carried out searches at its premises in Delhi and Faridabad. The police had also issued a notice to the university and requested documents from them. The police action followed complaints and actions initiated by UGC and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Both agencies had flagged serious irregularities at the university in their assessment and inquiry report. NAAC had also issued a show-cause notice to Al-Falah University for displaying false accreditation on its website. “The first FIR has been lodged for violations under Section 12, while the second FIR pertains to alleged false accreditation claims made by the university,” a senior officer said.The notice by NAAC said that the university was neither accredited nor had applied for accreditation by NAAC but displayed wrong information on its website.On Jan 16, ED had attached Rs 140 crore worth land and buildings of the university. The agency has also filed a chargesheet against Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui and his charitable trust.
