Nagpur: A dramatic escape unfolded near Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday evening when one of two accused in multiple motorcycle theft cases broke free from police custody after pelting stones at the escorting policemen and their vehicle. Three teams were formed to nab the accused, who was later arrested from Hingna at around 11pm.The accused, Rushi Mankar, along with co-accused Sahil Lanjewar, was arrested by Ramtek police (Nagpur rural) in connection with a series of bike thefts. During investigation, the duo was found to be involved in around five such cases.
Both were produced before a court on January 30 and remanded to judicial custody. On Thursday evening, a police team from Ramtek reached Nagpur Central Jail gate to hand over the accused for admission into the prison, as per procedure.However, during the transfer, Mankar suddenly turned aggressive and began pelting stones at the police personnel and the police vehicle, creating panic and confusion. Taking advantage of the situation, he managed to escape from the custody of the escorting team.Sources said the accused reportedly ran towards the forested stretch adjoining the Nagpur Central Jail and disappeared into the thick vegetation. A massive search operation was launched by Ramtek police, with assistance from other local units to trace and re-arrest the accused.None
