Chennai: After the Assembly election, Tasmac will let customers return empty liquor bottles at any shop within a district and pay them 10, backed by a new QR code system to simplify the process.Sources said distilleries will start printing labels on liquor bottles, which can be scanned while selling the liquor and re-scanned during collection of empty bottles, when shops re-open after the three day closure for the election this month (April 21, 22, 23). Currently, empty bottles can be returned only at the respective shop from which the liquor was purchased as the 10 label is manually pasted at each shop with the shop number. To address concerns of workers unions who complained of being overburdened, Tasmac instructed distilleries and breweries to generate separate QR codes for the empty bottle scheme as well, apart from the existing QR code system as part of the end-to-end computerization. “At least three distilleries – Southern Agrifurane Industries Pvt Ltd (SAFIL), Kals and Empee – have started dispatching liquor bottles with two QR codes. Others will also follow suit,” said the source.
