Vadodara: A viral video of a student’s dance performance to a Bollywood song during a cultural event at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) has sparked a campus controversy, drawing sharp reactions from student groups. The video shows a student from the faculty of arts performing to the song “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” during the three-day ‘Sanskar Sangam’ cultural event held at the university’s C C Mehta Auditorium. The event was organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), but its rival, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), termed the performance “obscene”.NSUI leaders objected to the act, saying such performances under the banner of culture were unacceptable. The organisation demanded suspension of those involved and a ban on groups allegedly promoting inappropriate activities, warning of agitation if action is not taken.Amid the controversy, ABVP issued a clarification distancing itself from the performance. The organisation said around 140 students were officially registered for the event, which included traditional dance, drama and cultural walk.ABVP claimed the student seen in the viral video was not among the registered participants and had come on stage during a break after repeatedly seeking permission. It said the performance differed from what was indicated earlier and that the music could not be stopped midway. The outfit also stated that the video was not shared through any official ABVP platform and was uploaded on the student’s personal social media account.
