Nagpur: The Nagpur rural district recorded 85 fatal accidents resulting in 91 deaths in the first quarter (January-March) 2026, the lowest such figures in the last eight years. The data reflects improved road safety across the Nagpur rural areas.Compared to the corresponding period in 2025, the district registered a sharp 30% reduction in fatalities and an overall 26% decline in accidents at 18 identified high-fatality black spots. Nagpur rural stood third in the list of Maharashtra districts with least road accidents. The data, released as part of the state’s comparative road accident statistics, shows a consistent downward trend in Nagpur rural from 2022 to 2026. Fatal crashes fell from 132 in the first quarter (January-March) 2022 to 85 in the corresponding period in 2026, while fatalities dropped from 148 to 91. This reduction in fatal accidents is the outcome of the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programme implemented by Nagpur rural police in partnership with SaveLIFE Foundation. “The initiative employs rigorous data analytics to identify high-risk locations, corridors and behaviours, followed by targeted interventions under the 4Es framework — Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency Care,” said Harssh Poddar, Superintendent of Police, Nagpur Rural, who is leading the ZFD initiative. Poddar attributed success to a scientific, multi-stakeholder approach. “Our data-driven strategy, backed by strict enforcement against speeding and dangerous driving, black spot corrections, vehicle fitness checks and focused public awareness campaigns, has delivered results for the first time at this scale in the district,” said SP Poddar. Poddar, known for pioneering AI applications in policing through the MARVEL unit, emphasised sustained focus on high-risk rural highways and state roads. In the broader context, the state continues to face challenges with 36,450 road accidents and 15,549 fatalities recorded in 2025. Against this backdrop, Nagpur Rural’s performance stands out as a beacon of what targeted, evidence-based interventions can achieve, said Poddar. The district police have appealed to citizens to adhere to traffic rules, wear helmets and seat belts, avoid speeding, drunk driving, and actively support road safety measures. Additional SP Anil Mhaske believes that continued public cooperation, along with ongoing engineering corrections and enforcement, will help push the district closer to the goal of zero road fatalities.
