Guwahati: The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) on Friday announced the HSLC Examination 2026 results, with the overall pass percentage rising to 65.62% from 63.98% last year. Boys recorded a pass percentage of 67.78%, ahead of girls at 63.96%. A total of 4,29,249 students appeared for the Class X examination.The board did not publish an official merit list of rankholders, but state education minister Ranoj Pegu and board officials later announced Jyotirmoy Das of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Patacharkuchi, in Bajali district, as the state topper. Jyotirmoy scored 591 out of 600 marks.Four students featured in the top three positions. Akankha Bhuyan of Ambikagiri Rai Chaudhuri Jatiya Vidyalaya, Hawajan, in Biswanath district, secured second place with 589 marks. The third position was shared by Jia Farah Islam of Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Dibrugarh, and Surjit Akhtar of Little Flowers School, Nalbari, with 588 marks each.Of the candidates who appeared, 85,189 secured first division, 1,50,167 obtained second division, and 46,345 passed in third division. ASSEB chairperson RC Jain said the trend was encouraging, with third-division passes gradually declining and first- and second-division numbers increasing.A total of 3,983 students scored distinction marks with 510 and above, while 13,681 candidates secured star marks by scoring between 450 and 509.“Heartiest congratulations to all students who passed the HSLC Examination 2026. May this milestone open new opportunities ahead,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a social media post.“To those who did not get the expected results, stay determined. With hard work and perseverance, you will surely succeed. My best wishes always,” he added.Among districts, Dima Hasao retained the top position with a pass percentage of 88.23%, followed by Sivasagar at 84.08% and Dibrugarh at 78.46%. Cachar recorded the lowest pass percentage at 49.13%.Speaking to mediapersons, Pegu said the rise in the pass percentage reflected “optimism”, but noted that Majuli and Nalbari, previously among top-performing districts, saw a decline and said the reasons would be examined. He said Cachar and Dhubri remained among the lowest-performing districts and required special attention from the education department.Pegu said the results were encouraging for Scheduled Caste students and tea garden students. The pass percentage among SC students stood at 59.82%, while tea garden areas recorded 50.52%, he said.“Our govt’s efforts to improve the quality of education, especially for students from areas like tea gardens, yielded positive outcomes,” he added.Pegu said community-wise, the pass percentages of OBC, MOBC, ST (Plain) and ST (Hills) students were above the average.
