New Delhi: What began as a birthday outing for a child ended in tragedy when a speeding truck rammed into an SUV near Murthal in Haryana’s Sonipat district, killing two women and injuring three others early on Thursday.The women, Mandeep Kaur and her sister Manpreet Kaur, residents of Uttam Nagar in southwest Delhi, were travelling with family members to Murthal’s popular dhabas to celebrate the birthday.The accident occurred around 2 am on National Highway-44 near the Golden Hut Dhaba. Police said the family briefly stopped their SUV on the roadside to purchase supplies when a truck approaching from behind crashed into the stationary vehicle at high speed.The impact crushed the rear portion of the SUV beyond recognition. The truck reportedly halted only after ploughing through roadside safety railings.Both women died on the spot, while three other women travelling in the vehicle suffered critical injuries. They were rushed to a nearby private hospital after police reached the scene.The truck driver fled the spot, abandoning the vehicle. Police have seized the truck and launched a manhunt to trace the accused.The bodies have been sent to the Civil Hospital in Sonipat for post-mortem. Further investigation is under way, police said.In a separate incident, two engineers from Delhi were killed in a road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district late Tuesday night while travelling to Haridwar to take a holy dip in the Ganga.
