Berhampur: Purported marital tensions led a 28-year old man to allegedly kill his 25-year-old wife with a kitchen knife and then commit suicide by hanging himself from the branch of a tree, around 200 m from his house. The incident was reported from Saranuapalli under Ganjam district’s Belaguntha police station limits on Monday night.People alerted police on spotted a body hanging on a farm on Tuesday morning. Thereafter, cops also recovered the woman’s body from the home. Both were sent for post-mortem at the Bhanjanagar sub-divisional hospital. The deceased couple was identified as Chitrasen Nayak, a labourer and his wife Puja Naik, parents of two minor boys.“Initial probe suggests that the incident may be a fallout of a domestic dispute that escalated to violence,” said Deepak Mishra, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Bhanjanagar. He said they had got married about seven years ago and were blessed with two boys, now aged six and four years.Police said they have had quarrels with each other almost every day. His wife even went off to Bhubaneswar with her two children for six months following a dispute. She worked as a labourer in the capital. She returned to the village on Sunday, leaving her two children with her brother-in-law (husband’s younger brother) for some bank work.On her return, the couple again started quarrelling on Monday night, which neighbours could hear, said police. This might be escalated into violence, the police reasoned. The man might have been shocked and probably committed suicide, said police.Police said the deceased’s relatives would be questioned to gather accurate information about the dispute and the circumstances which led to the incident.
