Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has written to the police seeking registration of an FIR against 10 school staff members for allegedly refusing to comply with duties assigned under the ongoing Census 2026-27 exercise.In an official communication dated April 6, issued by the assistant commissioner of Satranjipura zone, the civic body has urged the senior police inspector of Yashodhara Nagar police station to initiate legal action against the individuals. The letter cites provisions under the Census Act, 1948, and relevant directives from the Union ministry of home affairs, which make participation in census-related work mandatory for designated officials.According to the letter, the staff including a principal, teachers and administrative personnel were appointed as enumerators/supervisors for census work but they allegedly failed to discharge their duties despite repeated instructions. The civic administration has termed the act a violation of lawful orders, attracting penal action under Section 187 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for disobedience.NMC has authorised a junior engineer from the zone to pursue the complaint and coordinate with police for further proceedings.Civic officials said the issue persists across all 10 zones. Several enumerators and supervisors yet to join duty, they said. According to officials, multiple schools, colleges, and govt as well as semi-govt and unaided institutions have either failed to relieve staff or have refused to accept appointment orders. Taking serious note, the municipal commissioner directed assistant commissioners of all 10 zones to initiate action against non-compliant institutions.Police officials are yet to confirm whether a case has been filed in the matter.
