Ferozepur: The Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), Punjab, has condemned the “harassment” of the 1,158 Assistant Professors and Librarians’ front representatives and forcibly taking them to Faridkot police station ahead of the chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s rally at Jaito in Faridkot district.
DTF Punjab state president Vikram Dev Singh, general secretary Mahinder Kaurwali, and Ferozepur unit chief Malkit Singh Haraj, in a joint statement, stated that the reality of the education revolution of the AAP govt was coming before the public.
The leaders said there were about 2,100 vacant posts of professors in 64 govt colleges of Punjab, while only 130 posts were filled. “The govt is delaying the recruitment process of 1,158 assistant professors and is denying it by holding meetings. The postponement of the meeting at the last minute by education minister Harjot Singh Bains is irresponsible and condemnable,” the statement mentioned.
The DTF leaders said the detention of the struggling professors and librarians in police stations to intimidate them was a “clear violation of the values of democracy”. If the govt really wants to improve the education sector, then first of all it is necessary to fill the vacant posts and provide employment to the youth, and not to suppress their voice, they added.
Repeatedly harassing professors in the name of meetings and finally avoiding talks raises questions about the govt’s intentions, they said.
The DTF leaders warned that if the govt did not change its authoritarian attitude, the struggle would be intensified in the coming days, and demonstrations would be held at the state level.
They also said full support will be lent to the protest during the CM’s rally in Patiala on Monday.
The DTF Punjab emphasised that the recruitment of assistant professors and librarians should be completed immediately and justice be done to them, otherwise the govt would have to face serious consequences.
