Kanpur: Good Friday was observed with solemnity among the Christian community of the city on Friday. The holy day commemorated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. Binu Jacob, a senior teacher, St Xavier’s Inter College Ashok Nagar, said the day held significance for Christians worldwide , who observed this solemn day on the Friday before Easter, which commences with Palm Sunday and concludes with Easter.“On this occasion, our head priests guide their congregations to reverently recall Christ’s message and his sacrifice for humanity’s spiritual betterment. Priests and community members carry wooden crosses and chant hymns to identify themselves with Christ’s suffering,” he informed further.Fasting is also a significant part of observance. Many Christians abstain from food or consume only simple meals, until the afternoon prayers conclude. Some churches conducted long services that lasted up to three to four hours, including special prayers. tnn
