Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the Union govt to withdraw the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment (FCRA) Bill, 2026. Stalin said he was deeply concerned over the impact of the FCRA Bill on charitable institutions and minority communities. “The Christian community across India is agitated and aggrieved by the Bill. It poses an existential threat to organisations dependent on foreign funds for education, healthcare and welfare,” Stalin said. The FCRA Bill was tabled in Lok Sabha on March 25.Calling it a “draconian legislation,” Stalin said the FCRA bill could ‘dismantle’ India’s charitable ecosystem. “It will enable cancellation of registrations and takeover of assets, including schools and hospitals, without due process. Such measures would not just affect institutions but millions of vulnerable citizens, including dalits, tribals and the rural poor, who rely on these services.” The CM said neither the Centre nor state govts have the capacity to replace the vast network of grassroots services provided by these organisations.
