Guwahati: Asom Gana Parishad on Thursday released its election manifesto, promising socio-political and economic security for Assam’s indigenous communities through full implementation of the Assam Accord. The party also pledged to push the Centre to declare Assam’s flood and erosion crisis a national problem.A key regional ally of BJP, AGP listed 18 major resolutions aimed at building a secure and prosperous Assam. The manifesto was unveiled at the party headquarters in Ambari by vice-president Zoii Nath Sarmah and general secretaries Kamala Kalita, Manoj Saikia and Tularam Gogoi.Among its central promises, the party said it would stress constitutional safeguards for linguistic and cultural protection, along with full enforcement of land rights for indigenous communities. It proposed efforts to build a cultural research centre and a large modern cultural complex in the name of Zubeen Garg, and said it would urge authorities to build Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, Guwahati, as a symbol of Assam’s pride.Employment generation featured prominently, with the AGP promising new job opportunities for Assam’s youth in both govt and private sectors. It proposed setting up industries based on local resources, promoting business ventures and introducing new policies to transform agriculture and allied sectors.While Bodoland Territorial Region, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao already have autonomous councils under the Sixth Schedule, the AGP said it would focus on the development of tribal communities living outside these areas. It also pledged greater attention to the welfare of indigenous minority groups in the state.Calling the tea community an inseparable part of Assamese society, the party said it would continue to prioritise its development.
