Kolkata: Jadavpur University on Thursday dissolved the recently reconstituted placement cell following students’ pressure. The cell was restructured, involving faculty members, with an aim to improve placements and attract good companies for hiring graduates. “The placement cell with teachers was formed so that faculty members could help the placement officer streamline the process. But students objected to it. They want teachers as advisers only,” said VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee. “They said they would handle all the placements themselves. As they were making a fuss about it, I dissolved the cell. The earlier system will continue.”A section of students has been adamant on the continuation of the earlier system, under which student placement coordinators, along with a placement officer, handled the entire process. “The involvement of faculty members in the placement cell will be detrimental for the 2027 batch as they will enforce strict CGPA and backlog criteria. There will be an impact on company line-up as the professors may lack the specific experience required to engage with corporate HRs and invite companies. Moreover, students will be excluded from decision-making,” said a student.Pointing out that they had tried to convince students about the effectiveness of professors being involved, a teacher said, “We told them that student placement coordinators would be co-opted into the cell and how the new system was more effectiveness but they were not ready to understand. In other institutes, such as the IITs and NITs, teachers are part of the placement cell. It is out of frustration that the faculty members resigned and the cell was dissolved.”
