Jalandhar: Amid the Punjab govt’s plan to convene a special assembly session on April 13 to bring a stricter anti-sacrilege law, Sikh organisation Dal Khalsa has urged the Akal Takht jathedar to intervene and build a consensus on the issue. In an open letter, Dal Khalsa argued the issue was not a lack of legal provisions but a lack of political and administrative will to enforce existing laws. It also noted that there were divergent views within the Sikh community on the demand for a stricter law, and called for wider consultations to arrive at a collective position. The group said sacrilege-related cases had largely not been investigated thoroughly, and cited the Darbar Sahib incident and the Bargari and Kotkapura firing cases as examples where investigations did not reach a logical conclusion. The group urged the jathedar to play a “historic role” in guiding the community through the issue.
