Bhubaneswar: Two ambulance drivers were arrested on Monday for the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old woman from West Bengal on Friday night. Police sources said the crime took place after one of the accused, who is known to the survivor, reportedly offered to drop her at the railway station in his vehicle.The woman had recently come to Bhubaneswar to visit her husband, who is employed with a private company on the city’s outskirts. “On Friday evening, while she was searching for a cab to reach the railway station, one of the accused — who lives near her husband’s rented house — offered her a lift,” a police officer said.Trusting him, the woman agreed to travel with him. However, as per her complaint, he took her to his friend’s room, where both men allegedly took turns to sexually assault her.The survivor lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday. “We took the case seriously and registered a gang rape case. The two drivers were promptly arrested after we found evidence against them. We will ensure that the chargesheet is filed at the earliest,” DCP Jagmohan Meena said.Police recorded the woman’s statement, and the accused were remanded in judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected.
