Chandigarh: Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Saturday criticised the central govt over the weakening of Indian rupee amid rising military tensions between the United States and Iran. He said the BJP-led govt cannot hide its economic policy failures behind global conditions, adding that the falling rupee reflects weakening international confidence in India’s economy. The former deputy chief minister of Punjab said he heard Narendra Modi speak on the issue of a weakening rupee during his tenure as the chief minister and now he (Randhawa) is waiting to hear his views as the Prime Minister. He questioned when the Prime Minister would break his silence and address the issue.Randhawa said the central govt must explain that if the economy is as strong as claimed, why the rupee continues to depreciate against the dollar. He referred to earlier claims that the rupee would strengthen significantly, stating that the dollar has now crossed Rs 94 and may go beyond Rs 100, according to estimates. He added that the weakening rupee directly impacts prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and other imported goods, thereby fuelling inflation and burdening the common people. He warned that if timely economic measures are not taken, inflation and unemployment could worsen further. He demanded that the govt adopt effective and transparent policies to strengthen the economy, stabilise the rupee and provide relief to the public. MSID:: 129865748 413 |
