Ahmedabad: Harshil Dave, a second-year PhD scholar in the department of biological sciences and engineering at IIT Gandhinagar, is recognized for the Vikram Sarabhai Young Scientist Award 2026 by the Institute of Researchers (InRes). The award recognizes high-impact published research by an Indian researcher.Dave told TOI that his breakthrough research is in the domain of hydrogel that can support doctors during minimally invasive procedures in treating gastrointestinal conditions such as colorectal polyps (abnormal growths that can develop into cancer).“Instead of conventional use of saline, the hydrogel developed has a unique quality where it works as a liquid under normal conditions and semi solid when applied pressure. It reduces several complications including internal bleeding due to awkward location of the polyp to be removed,” said Dave. He said that the animal models study is successful, and they will soon go for clinical trial of the same. “It can also have other applications for various medical procedures,” he added.Hydrogel platform has demonstrated potential in tissue regeneration and wound healing by creating a protective, moisture-rich environment that supports recovery, said team members. Its inherent antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties further enhance its suitability for biomedical use.
