Kolkata: Trinamool on Saturday presented a counter ‘charge sheet’ against PM Narendra Modi-led central govt shortly after Union home minister Amit Shah presented the BJP version against the Trinamool govt led by CM Mamata Banerjee. The 13-point TMC ‘charge sheet’ pointed out how Bengalis have been hounded across BJP-governed states as illegal Bangladeshis. It also countered corruption charges by highlighting the manner in which several netas labelled as corrupt by BJP were later handed plum positions in BJP-led govts or the party. BJP’s failure in controlling the ethnic violence in Manipur, the terror attacks in Pahalgam and Delhi, and the rate of crimes against women in BJP states under Shah’s watch also figured prominently.State education minister Bratya Basu and Lok Sabha MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad read out the ‘charge sheet’. Dubbing Shah as “India’s most useless and failed” home minister, Moitra asked: “He is speaking about women’s oppression in Bengal. Why is he silent about Unnao-Hathras? Where is women’s safety in Manipur?”Shah repeatedly attacked TMC on the issue of infiltration. In response, Basu questioned: “Who is responsible for the borders? Under whose charge is BSF? Provide the data on how many Bangladeshis were excluded through SIR.”Moitra accused Shah of failing to control the violence in Manipur. Trinamool also questioned who would take responsibility for the deaths of 26 people in the Pahalgam attack and raised concerns over security in the capital, citing last Nov’s explosion.TMC’s ‘charge sheet’ claimed that the highest number of crimes against Scheduled Castes occurred in Uttar Pradesh, with the highest crime rate in Delhi. Rajasthan topped the list for crimes against women, while Madhya Pradesh led in crimes against children and Scheduled Tribes. TMC pointed out that Kolkata has been ranked the safest city in India for four consecutive years.Trinamool also accused the BJP govt of plotting to strip citizenship through CAA-NRC, claiming that SIR was conducted to disenfranchise voters. The ‘charge sheet’ mentioned that the current unemployment rate was the highest in 45 years, and how more than 1.7 million people have renounced Indian citizenship between 2014 and 2024.TMC said over 1 million farmers have died by suicide since 2014, with Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh leading the statistics. In the health sector, TMC highlighted the lack of oxygen in hospitals and vacancy of 68% specialist positions in community health centers. Moitra claimed only 0.44% of the GDP was allocated to education by BJP, with many positions vacant in various central educational institutions.
