Prayagraj: Researchers at Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT-A) have developed an advanced smart pill dispensing system designed to ensure patients take the right medicine at the right time and in the correct dosage, reports Rajeev Mani.The device, developed by Amit Prabhakar from the department of applied sciences along with researchers Priyanka Kumari and Sajal Kumar, has already been patented, and the team has initiated the process of commercialisation by forming a company. The smart dispenser, which consists of a box with a touch display and speakers, is aimed particularly at elderly patients and those suffering from long-term conditions like kidney, liver, heart ailments and diabetes and who are required to take multiple medicines several times a day. According to the researchers, the system incorporates medicine identification and dispensing confirmation features to ensure that the prescribed drug is actually delivered and consumed. The touch display allows patients or caregivers to easily set medication schedules, dosage details and other preferences. The interface has been designed to be simple and user-friendly, keeping elderly users in mind.
