Udupi: In two related incidents in Karkala and Shirva, police arrested five persons for attempting to attack officers with a car, obstructing official duty, and engaging in illegal betting activities.According to police, on Friday, around 2.30pm, PSI Prasanna MS of Karkala Rural police station, along with his staff, attempted to stop an SUV in Kasaba village. The vehicle was coming from Banglegudde Circle. When signalled to stop, the occupants of the car, identified as Sudarshan, Kartavya Shetty, Arun Srikant, and Shashikant, allegedly tried to run over the complainant and police personnel with the intention to kill, thereby obstructing them from discharging their official duties. A case has been registered at Karkala Town police station under Sections 109, 132, and 3(5) of the BNS.In a related incident at Shirva on the same day, around 3.10pm, PSI Manjunath Marabada of Shirva police station noticed the same suspicious SUV coming from Belman towards Shirva near Padu village. When he signalled the vehicle to stop, the driver sped towards him, suddenly slowed down, and pushed the officer aside through the car window before attempting to flee.The vehicle was later intercepted in Shirva town by police personnel. Upon inquiry, the occupants identified themselves as Sudarshan, Kartavya Shetty, and Arun. Further investigation revealed that, along with associates Srikant, Shashikant, Tejas (of Hebri), and Prajwal (of Byndoor), they were involved in organising cricket betting, allegedly cheating people by collecting money under the pretext of investment.A case has been registered at Shirva police station under Sections 132, 318(2), 112(1), and 3(5) of the BNS, along with Section 78(3) of the KP Act.In connection with both cases, police have arrested Sudarshan Shetty, 29, from Kundapur, Kartavya Shetty,27, from Kundapur, Arun Shetty,29, from Byndoor, Tejas,28, from Hebri and Prajwal Shetty,29, from Byndoor. All the accused have been taken into custody and will be produced before the court.
