Panaji: Rohit Monserrate will continue as mayor, and Vasant Agshikar will be appointed as the next deputy mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).Revenue minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate took the decision after consultations and discussions with senior BJP leaders.Rohit is likely to remain mayor until the declaration of the assembly election results in 2027, as Monserrate had already announced that Rohit would contest the next assembly election from a constituency in Tiswadi.‘Together for a Progressive Panaji’, Monserrate’s panel backed by BJP, had swept the CCP elections by winning 27 of the 30 wards.Monserrate told TOI that decisions were also taken on constituting new committees and deciding their respective members, including the standing committee, market committee, public health committee, public works committee, women and child welfare committee, and hospital committee.Rohit has now become the first CCP mayor to successfully complete a full five-year term in office since its formation.“To tell you honestly, Rohit will be an MLA of some constituency after the next assembly election. I am confident about it. Ultimately, people will decide. There are 40 constituencies for him to contest. He will abide by the decision of the party,” Monserrate said. He further said the party will eventually decide from which constituency he will contest.State govt, in a notification, said that the first meeting of the corporation will be held on March 30 at 11am to elect the mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee, and special consultative committees of the corporation, in compliance with the relevant section of the City of Panaji Corporation Act, 2002.
