A major electricity disruption hit the Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district early Sunday morning after a 33 KV electric pole was damaged in Rajarwani area due to a landslide triggered by ongoing widening work on the Uri–Baramulla national highway.
According to local residents, the incident occurred at dawn when a portion of loose soil and rocks from the hillside suddenly gave way. The debris slid down with force, striking a nearby electric pole and damaging it, plunging more than 50 villages into darkness.
The power outage has disrupted daily life across Uri on the second day of Eid.
Residents have also raised concerns over the safety of the highway widening project.
Officials from KPDCL rushed to the site soon after being informed.
“A team from the department is stationed near the spot. They are waiting for the highway to reopen, after which restoration work will begin,” said Imran Latief, AEE, KPDCL Uri.
“Until then, nothing can be said about the restoration of electricity,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Uri, Prince Kumar said that the highway is yet to be reopened as the area continues to experience sliding.
