Chandigarh: PGI has announced the establishment of a dedicated, standalone transplant centre at its upcoming Sarangpur satellite campus. The facility aims to bring all organ transplant disciplines under one roof, transitioning from the current decentralised model to a unified, world-class hub.The announcement was made by PGI director Prof Vivek Lal during the inaugural session of the Indian Society of Transplant Surgeons annual conference on Saturday. Prof Lal emphasised his personal commitment to the project, saying he would actively engage with the Union ministry of health to expedite development. “A standalone transplant centre at PGIMER will become a reality. We will strengthen infrastructure, expand training, and ensure that transplantation services grow in both scale and impact,” said Prof Lal. Currently, transplant services at PGI are spread across various specialised departments. While these units deliver strong clinical outcomes, the new centre is designed to streamline patient care by integrating all types of organ transplant surgeries. Kidney transplantation is currently handled by the departments of urology, general surgery, and transplant surgery. Liver and heart surgeries are managed by the hepatology and cardiothoracic departments. By centralising these services at the Sarangpur site — where space is already available — the institute aims to eliminate administrative and clinical delays. The new centre will feature additional surgical suites and specialised wards, providing a more seamless experience for both patients and donor families. Prof Lal described transplantation as a “noble surgery” that restores dignity and hope, particularly for those enduring the hardships of long-term dialysis. While PGI already possesses a pool of highly trained specialists and manpower, the standalone centre will allow these experts to focus exclusively on advancing all forms of organ transplant surgeries. The project is expected to significantly upscale transplant volumes, making PGI a premier destination for complex multi-organ procedures in the region. “PGI has the advantage of having the highest number of kidney transplant surgeries in the country. Being a Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations centre, it has been networking with the adjoining states for the transplant programme,” said a faculty member. MSID:: 129721122 413 |
