Times News NetworkChandigarh: A city resident lost Rs 7.4 lakh in an online work-from-home scam. Cyber police have registered a case against unknown persons and launched a probe. No arrest has been made in the case so far.The complainant, Govind Singh, 35, a resident of Milk Colony, Dhanas, UT, said that in Nov 2024, he received messages offering work-from-home opportunities from four different mobile numbers. They first contacted the victim on WhatsApp and then diverted him to Telegram. He said they assigned simple tasks such as providing reviews and ratings, for which they promised him Rs 50 per review. After completing three tasks, the fraudsters transferred Rs 300 to his account and added him to a Telegram group named VVIP Webbull. Then they convinced him to invest money by promising good returns within 10 minutes. The victim made several transactions on different occasions in the accounts provided by the accused.After receiving Rs 7.4 lakh from the victim, the fraudsters created his login ID on their website. When the complainant tried to withdraw his funds, they informed him that his account had been frozen and demanded Rs 2.5 lakh to unfreeze it. Despite paying additional amounts, they continued making excuses and demanded more money. Eventually, the cheaters stopped responding, deleted the Telegram groups, and all contact numbers became unreachable. After verifying the facts, police registered a case against unknown persons.
