T’puram: A Rs 100-crore drinking water project aimed at resolving the water shortage in Perumkadavila and Aryancode panchayats has run into serious trouble within two months of its inauguration, with repeated pipeline leaks disrupting supply. The Kizhakkanmala drinking water project, commissioned in Jan, has been facing frequent pipeline bursts whenever water is pumped through the system. Residents allege that large quantities of treated water are being wasted, often flowing onto nearby roads instead of reaching households. Local representatives have raised concerns over durability of newly laid pipelines, claiming they are unable to withstand pressure generated during pumping. Allegations have also surfaced regarding use of substandard materials, prompting demands for a detailed quality inspection. The project was conceived nearly three years ago to address chronic water scarcity in the region. Earlier, residents depended on smaller treatment plants at Pazhamala, Mambazhakkara and Aripparam, which struggled to meet demand, especially during the summer season. Of the total cost, around Rs 60 crore was spent on constructing the main water treatment facility, while nearly Rs 40 crore was allocated for laying distribution pipelines across the two panchayats. According to residents, issues began soon after the project was commissioned, with leaks reported during each pumping cycle. Despite repeated complaints to KWA, locals say no effective action has been taken so far. Perumkadavila panchayat vice-president Binil Manaluvilla said many households continue to face water shortages despite the massive investment.Following the complaints, KWA has initiated an inquiry. Officials said steps are being taken to rectify defects and assured that issues will be resolved within 15 days. Pipeline works in the affected areas are expected to be completed by March 31.
