Bengaluru: An employee of a jewellery shop on Avenue Road stole gold ornaments worth around Rs 79 lakh when the jeweller briefly stepped out of the store.According to the complaint filed by Vishal Jain, 36, owner of Sankit Gold in CT Street Cross on Avenue Road, the accused, Jashwant Singh alias Babu, a native of Rajasthan, joined the store as a helper in Nov 2025 for a salary of Rs 12,000 per month. On Dec 10, he quit his job, citing inadequate salary. A few days later, Jashwant called Vishal, saying he was willing to rejoin his shop for a salary of Rs 15,000 per month. Vishal agreed and Jashwant rejoined work on Feb 13 this year. On March 18, between 5.40pm and 5.55pm, Vishal stepped out briefly to relieve himself after locking the door of his shop. When he returned at 5.55pm, he found the shop door open and Jashwant missing. On checking, he found 18 long and 15 short gold necklaces, weighing 616 grams in total, along with Rs 1 lakh in cash missing. The total value of the 18-carat stolen gold is estimated at Rs 78.8 lakh.Attempts to contact the accused failed as his mobile phone was switched off. A case was registered under BNS Section 306 (theft in a dwelling house, or means of transportation or place of worship, etc) at City Market police station. Police advise cautionTo prevent fraud, police advise conducting thorough background verification, collecting ID proof and checking previous employment history from any newly hired helper. They said shop and house owners should install CCTV cameras covering all areas, including entry/exit points. They stole silver ornaments from Dhanalaxmi Rhodium LLP, a silver polishing unit in Bettappa Lane on CT Street, owned by Kishan Bishnoi.Bishnoi told police Naresh joined the shop as a polisher about a month prior to the theft and was staying on the premises. On Jan 21, he allegedly stole the ornaments with Kuldeep and escaped.Police traced the two to Rajasthan, where they were hiding.
