Nagpur: Indiscipline among newly elected corporators again came to the fore during the first general body meeting of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, with several members arriving late and heated exchanges inside the House.Despite the meeting scheduled for 11am, leaders of the ruling side reached the venue much later, resulting in a delayed start. Both the ruling party and opposition members were seen displaying a casual attitude during discussions.Sharp disagreements were witnessed even among ruling party corporators over multiple issues, including the functioning of OCWL, irregularities in the transport department, garbage problems at the Bhandewadi dumping yard, and poor maintenance of green gyms. Mayor Neeta Thakre also expressed concern over the situation and said members would be specifically instructed to maintain discipline and punctuality during future meetings.Rupali Thakur inducted into fire committeeRuling party leader Balya Borkar submitted a letter to mayor Neeta Thakre nominating Rupali Thakur as a new member of the Fire Special Committee. The post was vacant after corporator and former mayor Mayatai Ivnate resigned from the committee following her election to the Rajya Sabha.Deputy mayor to head naming panelThe House also approved the formation of a committee to name city squares and roads. Deputy mayor Leela Hathibed has been appointed as its chairperson. BJP members Dilip Dive, Vinod Kanhere, Ramdas Sahu and Chandrakant Khangar, along with Congress members Deepak Patel and Asif Sadiq Sheikh, have been included in the panel. NCP corporator Abha Pande demanded that a statue of late deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar should be installed at GPO Square and also name the road in front of deputy CM’s house as Ajit Path.Panel formed to monitor parks and playgroundsThe general body also constituted a committee to monitor the maintenance of playgrounds and gardens in the city. The panel will be headed by additional municipal commissioner Vasumuna Pant and will include senior officials from the civic administration and engineering departments.Seasoned netas breach decorumIn the 151-member House, as many as 92 corporators are first-time entrants. However, it was not just the newcomers who were found breaching the decorum of the general body — even several seasoned corporators were seen arriving late, engaging in heated exchanges and disregarding the basic norms of the House.
