Ludhiana: Markets transformed into hubs of festive activity this week as the city’s Muslim community prepared for Saturday’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, though religious leaders have called for a subdued observance in light of international conflict. The Shahi Imam of Punjab, Muhammad Usman Ludhianvi, issued a directive urging families to celebrate in a “simple way” this year, citing the high death toll from ongoing wars in the Middle East. Despite the somber undertone, the traditional spirit of charity and community remains at the forefront of the city’s preparations.Despite cloudy skies and recent rainfall, key commercial districts including Field Ganj, Suffiyan Bagh, Janakpura, and Chaura Bazar reported a significant surge in foot traffic. “There was much activity at Field Ganj as members of the community shopped for the festival,” said Muhammad Shami, a local fruit trader. He noted that shoppers were prioritising fresh produce and raw ingredients for traditional meat dishes, as well as seviyan (vermicelli), the signature ingredient for the holiday’s trademark sweets.Traditions of taste and attireFor many, the preparation for Eid is a multisensory experience involving new clothing and elaborate home-cooked meals. Traditional attire remains the preference, with many young people, such as teenager Muhammad Amir, opting for new kurta pyjamas to wear during morning prayers. Homemakers are preparing a variety of regional delicacies. “We mostly serve biryani and korma to guests for lunch,” said resident Zarina Begum. “But seviyan remains the special delicacy for the day.”GenerosityCentral to the observance is the practice of feeding the poor and donating money to those in need, a sentiment echoed by the Shahi Imam’s call to support the vulnerable. For the city’s youth, the excitement of Eidi — the traditional gift of money from elders — remains a highlight. However, for many, the celebration is also a time for reflection. Amir noted that his prayers this Saturday would focus on “humanity and the prosperity of the country”.Preparations for prayerLocal authorities and mosque committees have finalized arrangements for large-scale congregational prayers at several key locations, including Jama Masjid, Sufiyaan Bagh, Gill Road Mosque, and Civil Lines Mosque.
