Rajkot: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has stepped up measures at Pradyuman Park Zoo to shield animals from the approaching summer heat, ensuring they remain healthy and stress-free in the weeks ahead.Managed under the guidance of the Central Zoo Authority of India, the zoo is a major attraction in Saurashtra, housing 595 animals and birds across 69 species. Officials say the transition from rainy to hot weather is especially challenging, requiring careful planning to prevent heat stress among wildlife. To keep large animals comfortable, enclosures for lions, tigers, leopards, and bears have been fitted with water ponds for cooling during peak afternoon hours. Fogger systems help lower surrounding temperatures, while wooden shelters provide shade. Night shelters have been equipped with fans and coolers to ensure comfort after sunset. Bears are also given fruit-based frozen treats to stay hydrated and beat the heat.Smaller animals such as foxes, jackals, and civets have specially designed shaded caves inside their enclosures. These spaces, along with foggers and fans, allow them to escape direct sunlight. Monkeys receive fruit treats and access to shaded areas to keep cool.Birds and deer are also receiving special attention. Bird enclosures now feature dry grass sheds and misting systems, while deer can cool off in mud ponds, mimicking natural conditions. To prevent dehydration, zoo authorities have added Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to drinking water. Seasonal changes in feeding patterns have been noted as well: carnivores reduce intake by around 10%, while reptiles such as snakes and crocodiles tend to eat more during summer.Officials said the measures aim to recreate natural conditions inside the zoo, helping animals adjust smoothly from the recent rain to the intense summer heat. “With these arrangements, we hope all animals remain healthy and stress-free throughout the season,” said an RMC spokesperson.
