Mumbai City FC carved out a narrow yet impressive 1-0 win over defending champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant in an ISL encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.
The only goal came from winger Noufal P.N., who struck midway through the first half to tilt the contest in the visitor’s favour. The victory lifted Mumbai to the top of the standings with 14 points from six matches, while Bagan slipped to second with 13 off six.
Mumbai settled into the contest after a cautious start and began to threaten through swift counter-attacks. It came close to taking the lead in the 22nd minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte was released by a precise pass from Jorge Pereyra Diaz, but goalkeeper Vishal Kaith produced a sharp save, with Mehtab Singh clearing the rebound.
The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute following a fluent attacking move. Pereyra Diaz combined neatly with Joni Kauko before the ball was worked across to an unmarked Noufal, who calmly curled a low shot past Kaith.
Bagan responded strongly and could have equalised in the 39th minute. Dimitri Petratos whipped in a teasing cross that Jason Cummings directed goalwards, but Mumbai goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa produced a vital save. After the break, the away side adopted a disciplined defensive approach, restricting Bagan’s chances. Despite pressure from the host, the visitor held firm.
