Trichy: A 19-year-old college student was arrested for assaulting a female student and her brother in a dispute between them on the premises of the Government Arts College in Thuvakudi, Trichy district.
The accused has been identified as B Kirubakaran, a second-year undergraduate student.
According to police sources, on March 9, a first-year undergraduate girl student, was heading to the first floor of the college when Kirubakaran, accidentally knocked the mobile phone from her hand, causing it to drop to the ground. A verbal argument broke out between the two.
The female student informed her brother, who is studying in the same college. The brother then confronted Kirubakaran. Later, Kirubakaran reportedly issued threats to him over phone.
The girl lodged a complaint at Thuvakudi police station.
On Wednesday around noon, Kirubakaran confronted the siblings, verbally abused them for having reported the issue to the police, and an altercation ensued. In a fit of rage, Kirubakaran physically assaulted both the girl and her brother. A video of the assault went viral on social media.
The injured female student was admitted at Trichy govt hospital. Based on her statement, a formal case was registered in Thuvakudi police station on Thursday. Kirubakaran was arrested and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Trichy district police clarfied that the assault arose from the argument following the accidental knocking of the complainant’s phone and was not related to ragging, contrary to reports by some sections of the media.
