Gurgaon: A case was registered at Cyber Police Station East after a youth alleged that a fake Instagram account in his name was being used to tarnish his image, harass him mentally and extort money.The complainant, a resident of Sushant Lok Phase-2, approached police stating that an unidentified person created a fake profile in his name on Instagram. The account, he said, was being used to upload content aimed at damaging his reputation and misleading people who knew him personally and professionally.Police are working to trace the origin of the account and identify the person behind it, an officer said. According to the complaint, the accused also contacted him and demanded money while continuing to harass him through the fake account. The victim said the incident caused him considerable mental distress as his identity was being misused on a widely used social media platform.The officer said the complaint was received on Tuesday following which a case was registered at Cyber Police Station East under relevant sections.He added that technical analysis of the account details, including IP logs and linked information, is being carried out to track the accused. Efforts are also underway to coordinate with the social media platform to obtain necessary data related to the account.Police added that strict action will be taken once the accused is identified. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
