Sonipat: Haryana Police are investigating a grim murder-suicide that has exposed a fractured family dynamic, involving a property dispute and a haunting connection to a suspicious death two years ago.The bodies of Mahavir Rana, 74, and his sister-in-law Asha Rani, 75, were discovered on Tuesday inside their shared house in Sonipat. Investigators found Rana’s body hanging from a fixture, while Rani was discovered in the kitchen in a pool of blood, her throat slashed. The alarm was raised by the family’s domestic help, who found the house locked from the inside during a morning visit. When she returned at 1.30pm to find the doors still barred, she alerted neighbours and relatives. Upon forcing entry, members of the family discovered the scene and notified police authorities. Forensic teams spent the afternoon scouring the property for evidence. In a bizarre twist, investigators discovered two messages written in chalk on a bed box and a wardrobe (almirah). The writings reportedly name specific relatives — identified as Usha and her husband, Dinesh —accusing them of involvement in a previous family tragedy. Police are treating these messages as “crucial leads” while they work to verify the handwriting and the validity of the allegations.A house dividedThe investigation has centered on a long-standing feud over the family home, which was partitioned between Rani, her late husband, Bir Singh, and Rana. Sources indicate that simmering tensions over the ownership and potential sale of the house had escalated recently. Rani was reportedly eager to sell her share of the property, a move other members of the family opposed.A suspicious pastDetectives are also reopening files on the death of Rani’s husband, Bir Singh, who died under “suspicious circumstances” in the same house in 2022. Rani’s only son has been living in Oman for several years, leaving the elderly relatives to navigate the dispute alone. Savit Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Sector 27, confirmed that the investigation was following multiple leads “including the family dispute and the names mentioned in the messages found on the scene”.He said: “The exact sequence of events will be established after forensic analysis.” Legal action is pending further statements from the extended family and the results of the post-mortem examinations.
