Jaipur: The district Consumer Commission Jaipur-II Monday ordered an interim stay on the operations of a McDonald’s outlet at Gaurav Tower over allegations of food being prepared in cooking oil unfit for consumption. The commission also directed actor Ranveer Singh not to promote the restaurant through ads it said were misleading. The interim order was passed by a bench comprising president Gyarasi Lal Meena, and members Supriya Agrawal and Ajay Kumar while hearing a stay petition filed by complainant Gaurav Tiwari.Complainant’s counsel, Inder Mohan Singh, said a team from the food safety commissionerate conducted a surprise inspection at the outlet on Feb 9 and allegedly found that food items were being prepared using contaminated cooking oil in which the total polar compounds, or TPC, levels in the cooking oil was recorded at 28 and 31, above the legal limit of 25. It argued that oil with a TPC level above the prescribed threshold is unsafe for consumption. The petition also alleged that despite the findings, the outlet continued advertising its food products through campaigns featuring Ranveer Singh, potentially misleading consumers about the safety and quality of the food being served.Taking note of the allegations, the commission ordered a temporary halt to the outlet’s operations and related promotional activities as a necessary measure to safeguard consumer health.
