Coimbatore: Saravanampatti police have initiated an investigation after a gang assaulted two college students over a rent dispute in the city on Saturday.V Surya, 20, a private college student from Ondipudur, and his friend Sanjay were injured in the attack by an unidentified gang of youths.Police said Surya’s friend Dinesh Karthik had vacated a private hostel in Gandhipuram three months ago. Dinesh had been sharing a room with two other students, Naveen Kumar and Kesavan. The duo reportedly asked Dinesh for 3,500 towards pending rent and electricity charges. Dinesh asked them to deduct the amount from his 5,000 security deposit, which he had paid to the building owner, and return the balance. Although the two collected the full deposit from the owner, they delayed returning the balance. When Surya questioned them about it, Naveen asked to meet him near Textool Bridge in Ganapathy to settle the matter.However, when Surya reached the spot, a gang of four, wearing blue masks, attacked Surya with a knife. Surya suffered a bleeding injury to his left forearm while trying to block the attack. When his friend Sanjay tried to intervene, the gang also attacked him as well. The gang fled, when the public rushed to their help on hearing their screams. Saravanampatti police have registered a case and are investigating to identify the gang.
