Jammu, Mar 12: Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the attempted attack on Dr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, after an individual allegedly tried to open fire at him during a wedding function in Jammu.
According to an official order issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Jammu, the incident occurred on the night of March 11 when Abdullah was attending a marriage ceremony at the Royal Park Banquet Hall in the Greater Kailash area of the city.
Police said that at around 10:10 pm, when the veteran leader was leaving the venue after attending the function, an individual suddenly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range. However, the attempt was swiftly foiled by the alert security personnel deployed with the protectee, preventing any harm to Abdullah.
The accused was immediately overpowered and taken into custody, averting what officials described as a serious security breach.
Following the incident, a case FIR No. 29/2026 has been registered at Police Station Gangyal under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
“Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case, a Special Investigation Team has been constituted to conduct a thorough investigation,” the order issued by Bhim Sen Tuti, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, said.
The SIT will function under the supervision of the DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range and comprises senior police officers, including Sanjay Sharma (SSP, SO to DIG JSK Range), Irshad Hussain Rather (SP Headquarters Jammu), Arvind Kumar Sambyal (DySP RPHQ Jammu) and other officers from the Jammu district police.
Officials said the SIT has been directed to carry out a detailed and time-bound investigation, including examining the motive behind the attack, the background of the accused, and whether there were any security lapses at the venue.
The attempt triggered panic at the wedding venue late Wednesday night, with guests rushing for safety before the situation was brought under control by the police and security personnel.
Meanwhile, political leaders across party lines condemned the incident and demanded a transparent and time-bound investigation into the matter.
