Lucknow: A 35-year-old man allegedly bludgeoned his mother to death with a brick following an argument over his drinking habit in Unchakhera Kalan village of Sitapur on Friday.The accused was arrested from the house soon after the incident.Malti (65) was at home when her son, Harishankar, allegedly started arguing with her after she objected to his drinking. The verbal spat soon escalated into a violent confrontation. In a fit of rage, Harishankar reportedly picked up a brick and repeatedly struck his mother on the head. The attack caused severe bleeding, and the elderly woman died on the spot.Hearing Malti’s screams, villagers rushed to the house. However, by the time they arrived, the accused had locked himself inside a room. The villagers immediately informed the police.Villagers said Harishankar was addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled with his mother over his addiction.They also claimed that Malti earlier expressed fears to neighbours that her son might harm her someday, though she did not lodge any complaint with the police.Residents further revealed that Harishankar is married, but his wife, Seema, left him several years ago due to his violent behaviour and alcohol addiction. She currently lives in Lucknow with their four children.According to Seema, Harishankar sold most household belongings to sustain his drinking habit. The family owns barely 5 biswa of agricultural land, forcing her to move to the city to support the children.Villagers also recalled that Harishankar’s father, Mathura Prasad, died around five years ago under suspicious circumstances.Additional superintendent of police (South) Durgesh Singh visited the spot to review the investigation. Kamalapur station house officer Itul Chaudhary said an FIR was registered under relevant sections of murder.
