Kanpur: Additional district and sessions judge, Kanpur Nagar, Subhash Singh, on Friday sentenced a husband named Premanshu to 8 years and 6 months rigorous imprisonment along wit a fine of Rs 4,000 for dowry death.The judge, in his order, observed that if the accused failed to pay the fine, then he had to suffer another jail term of 15 days. The period the accused had spent in jail during the trial would be adjusted in the sentence.The court acquitted his mother, Mithlesh, for want of evidence.According to ADGC Bhaskar Mishra, Tilak Ram, resident of the Nawabganj area, in an FIR lodged at the police station, stated that he had married his daughter Prabha to Premanshu, a resident of the CSA campus, on January 25, 2015, and gave him an i-10 car along with other gifts and Rs 50,000 cash.Not satisfied with the gifts, Premanshu and his family members demanded Rs 10 lakh to purchase a plot, and they used to torture her. In May, they thrashed Prabha and forced her to leave the house, with the comment, “Return only when you bring Rs 10 lakh with you.”On September 25, 2015, Premanshu came to his house and took Prabha with him. He assured that there would be no torture or thrashing in future. After a couple of days, his daughter made a call and informed him that Premanshu and others were torturing her and would kill her.Tilak Ram stated that he consoled the girl and said he would reach there the next morning. But before he could reach the next morning, his son-in-law informed him that Prabha had hanged herself. When he reached her house, he came to know that the dead body was in the mortuary. He alleged that Premanshu and others not only thrashed Prabha but also hanged her to kill her.The police charged Premanshu and his mother, Mithlesh, under sections 498A/323/304B of IPC and section 3/4 Anti-Dowry Act.
