Varanasi: The Saraimir police in Azamgarh district on Wednesday evening arrested a person, who extorted money from motorcyclists on the pretext of helmet checking, posing as a police officer.The police also seized Rs 12,900 cash from accused Awadhesh Yadav of Mojrapur, who has 13 cases pending against him at different police stations in Azamgarh and Mau districts.Azamgarh Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said that a person lodged a complaint with Saraimir police, alleging that when he was returning home from market, a ‘policeman’ stopped him near Shahpur turning and in the name of helmet checking, frisked him and took away Rs 3,000 from his wallet. Based on the complaint, teams were engaged to nab the accused. On Wednesday, Saraimir police succeeded in intercepting the imposter on Shahpur Road. During interrogation, he confessed to his crime.
