Gorakhpur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur has started an advanced radiofrequency ablation (RFA) facility for treatment of chronic and complex pain conditions, offering patients in eastern UP access to modern pain management techniques, the medical institution said on Wednesday.The facility has been introduced by department of anesthesiology, pain medicine and critical care. The newly installed machine is equipped with advanced technologies including Conventional RFA, Cooled RFA and Pulsed RFA, enabling doctors to select the most appropriate technique depending on the patient’s condition and the nerve involved.Doctors recently used the technology to treat successfully a 51-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe knee pain due to osteoarthritis for nearly two years. She reported significant relief after undergoing the procedure.The department runs a dedicated pain clinic OPD under supervision of Prof Santosh Kumar Sharma, head of the department, and Ravi Shankar Sharma.The technique helps in treating conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, osteoarthritis-related knee pain, cervical and lumbar spondylosis, facet joint back pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, chronic shoulder pain, postherpetic neuralgia and certain cancer-related pain cases.Officials said facility will reduce need for patients from the region to travel to metro cities for advanced pain treatment.
