The Michigan State Police said on Thursday (March 12, 2026) it was aware of an active shooting incident at the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan.
FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X: “FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.”
Police said they responded after reports of an “active shooter” at the synagogue outside Detroit. Aerial news footage from the scene showed plumes of smoke rising from the roof of the synagogue, with several police vehicles nearby.
WDIV-TV reported that a truck crashed into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township. Footage from the scene shows dozens of police vehicles surrounding the building.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all Jewish organisations in the area “to go into lockout protocol — nobody in or out of your building.”
